Latham concluded that a ‘general exhaustion of the powers’ could produce a ‘lowering of the tone of the body’, a contraction of the vessels of the brain and, due to interference by the sympathetic nervous system, a subsequent widening of the vessels and the headache . He hypothesised that ‘gastric derangement’ might also be a cause, hence his use of the term ‘bilious headache ’, which implied a derangement of the abdominal organs. As a kind of afterthought, he even noted that he saw a relationship, ‘though happily a distant one’, with epilepsy —a relationship many clinicians today still consider of relevance, even though Latham’s other ideas have long since been discarded.
